Then the headliner walks out and the festival grounds turns into the loudest, tastiest weekend in Atlantic Canada.<\/p>\n

Sommo Music Festival packs music, food, and drinks into a single September weekend, but the festival grounds are only part of the trip. Here’s how to make the rest of it just as good, with a place to sleep that doesn’t require a long drive, a lobster supper to bookend the culinary experience on-site, and a plan for the friend or partner who came along but isn’t going to a single set.<\/p>\n

Avonlea Village, 8779 Route 6, Cavendish. About 45 minutes from Charlottetown and roughly 35 minutes from Summerside.<\/p>\n

Getting there<\/h5>\n

Onsite Parking behind the main stage runs $25\/day; offsite parking at Tourist Mart is $20\/day, no ticket type includes complimentary parking. Taxi and rideshare pickup points are set up at Tourist Mart (from the west) and the Cavendish Beach Information Centre (from the east). If you’re camping at Route 6 Ranch, ask about shuttle passes when you book.<\/p>\n

Where to stay<\/span><\/h4>\n

Where to sleep decides how good your weekend is. Here’s how to think about it as a traveler type, not just a property.<\/p>\n

Walk to the Grounds<\/h5>\n

If you want to leave your car parked all weekend, a handful of campgrounds and cottage courts sit within walking distance of the festival grounds, including Sunset Campground, Lakeview Lodge & Cottages, Kindred Spirits Inn & Cottages, Green Gables Bungalow Court, and Cavendish Lodge & Cottages. Route 6 Ranch, the official campground for both Sommo and CBMF, also offers shuttle passes for it’s guest. These book out fast, walkable sites are typically gone well before the fall lineup announcement, so treat this as a book first, plan later.<\/p>\n

Family Base Camp<\/h5>\n

Sommo skews a bit older and more food and drink focused than CBMF, but families still make the trip for the daytime culinary programming and the beach. If you’re bringing a mix of festival goers and non attendees, look for properties with pools, kitchens, and room to spread out, several of the larger cotttage resorts and campgrounds around Cavendish are built for exactly this.<\/p>\n

Quieter Exscape<\/h5>\n

For a bit of distance from the party, the inns and B&Bs in North Rustico, Stanley Bridge, and New Glasgow put you 10-15 minutes from the gates but a word away from the noise at 1 a.m. This stretch of coast, the Green Gables Shore, is hands down the best coastal drive on the island, so the commute is part of the fun.<\/p>\n

Booked solid? Widen the circle<\/h5>\n

If Cavendish itself is sold out, Brackley Beach ( 20-25 minutes), Summerside (25-30 minutes), and Charlottetown (30-35 minutes) all have solid inventory and easy shuttle or drive access. A Charlottetown base also gives you a backup plan for restaurants and night life on non-festival days.<\/p>\n

The Non-Festival Hours: A Day Playbook<\/span><\/h4>\n

This is the part most visitors miss, and the reason a festival ticket can justify 3-4 night trip instead of a 1-2 night blur.<\/h4>\n

Mornings: recovery mode<\/h5>\n

Ease in with coffee and a slow start. Samuel’s at Avonlea Village pours a strong cold brew and a good sandwich if you don’t want to stray far. For something quieter, Frothy Coffee, Tide and Tales Bistro & Bookstore or The little maison on North Rustico’s Seawalk Park are favourites among locals. Grab a latte and walk down to the harbour. Cavendish Main Beach is close by and very peaceful early in the morning; a barefoot walk on the sand does more for a festival hangover than a second coffee ever will.<\/p>\n

Early afternoon: before the gates open<\/h5>\n

Fill the gaps between checkout and gates with beach time, or head to Green Gables Heritage Place. The farmhouse and gardens that inspired Anne of Green Gables, with walking trails including the Haunted Woods and Lover’s Lane. Maybe it’s a spa relaxation at the Spa at Dalvay or Cocoon at the Beach. Golfers can squeeze nine holes nearby, and families with younger kids who aren’t festival bound have go-karts, mini golf, and beach adjacent attractions all within a few minutes of Cavendish. Or maybe you want to relax at lunch with a cocktail at some popular locations nearby like The Blue Mussel Cafe, Sou’West or Carr’s Oyster Bar and just take in the view.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Late nights: after the encore<\/h5>\n

Know your exit plan before the last song ends. The shuttle lines and parking lot back-ups are real, and locals know which side roads clear out faster than the main route. If you need food after, a handful of spots near Avonlea and North Rustico stay open late for festival weekends; ask your accommodation host for what’s currently open, since late-night hours shift year to year. if you’re driving anywhere after a full day of drinking in the sun, use the shuttle or a designated driver. No exceptions.<\/p>\n

The non-fan in your group<\/h5>\n

Not everyone in the car has a wristband, and that’s okay. PEI’s north shore is built for a slower parallel vacation. Think a spa afternoon, deep-sea fishing, or a Rustico bay boat tour, browsing the boutiques and studios along the Green Gables Shore, or an evening ceilidh for live traditional music without the festival crowd. It’s an easy way to make sure everyone comes home saying the trip was worth it, not just the show.<\/p>\n

Eat like You’re Here for the Food<\/span><\/h4>\n

A trip to PEI without a lobster supper isn’t really a trip to PEI. New Glasgow Lobster Suppers<\/a>, about 10 minutes from Cavendish, has been doing the full spread, chowder, mussels, warm rolls, a full lobster, and the famous mile-high lemon meringue pie since 1958, and it’s a classic pick for a festival weekend blowout dinner. Fisherman’s Wharf<\/a> in North Rustico is the other long-running option, located in North Rustico.<\/p>\n

Closer to the gates, keep pre-show meals quick: the counter-service locations around Avonlea and North Rustico are built for exactly this, serving fresh haddock, lobster rolls, hand-cut fries, and burgers fast enough to make gate times. For drinks, look for Island ciders and craft beer at Lone Oak Brewing,<\/a> served on site and at their nearby patio in Avonlea Village, a good way to sample PEI’s growing craft beer scene between sets.<\/p>\n
